Do you remember back when you were 21 and naturally fresh and dewy and beautiful, and you could put on a pair of blue jeans and a white T-shirt and go outside with no makeup and look fabulous?
Do you remember when your natural, fresh, young self would cause heads to turn simply because you were natural, fresh and young?
I do, too – but that was a long, long time ago. (And, boy, I certainly wish I had appreciated my young fabulousness a little more when I had it!)
Now we have to work a little harder to make heads turn.
Now we have to add sparkle.
Fortunately, we can shop at Anthony’s for our women’s fashion and accessories – and this is the perfect place for a Baby Boomer like me to get just the right amount of bling. The sales associates at Anthony’s have helped me create a sparkling style that’s just right for me. It bumps up my look without making me look like a flashing marquee.
I like tops with sparkly embroidery or jewel work at the neckline, and I love pants with a touch of sparkle at the ankle. Why sparkle and shine there? Because sparkle and shine attracts attention – and I want that attention on my face, because I’m smiling and happy and relaxed (I live in Florida!) or where I am still naturally fresh and skinny, my ankles! (The Isadela slim black pants with sparkle at the hem are perfect! And exclusive to Anthony’s).
Here are my three tips for adding bling:
Tip No. 1: Go high or go low
Like I said: Sparkle should be at the neckline or near a pant hem. Adding sparkle to the middle or to your hip area is like tying the Jupiter Lighthouse beacon to your waist or bum. This is not a good idea unless you are trying to lure a sailor.
Tip No. 2: A vibrant or active print is like bling
If you’re like me, you love prints. Printed tops are my fave – because prints draw attention, and I like attention up at my smiling face. If you are wearing a printed top, however, you need to cut back on the sparkle – because a festive print acts like a piece of sparkle. Too much bling is, again, like wearing the Jupiter Lighthouse beacon.
Tip No. 3: No more than three pieces of bling
At our age, we like to wear sparkle because it attracts attention and gets us compliments. And what woman does not want compliments? But if you overdo the bling, people could be blinded by your overly earnest fashion sense.
So ... if your top has jewels along the neckline, skip a necklace. Wear a nice wide cuff bracelet instead.
And shine on!
LOVE FLORIDA TRAVEL?
Here’s Val’s Florida vacay tip of the week: Take your sparkle out for cocktails!
One of my favorite spots to get a drink in Palm Beach County is the Seafood Bar at The Breakers in Palm Beach. It’s so lovely to spend an hour or two during the season at the world-famous Breakers hotel. Did you know that the Anthony’s family had a store at Henry Flagler’s first resort hotel in Palm Beach, the Royal Poinciana Hotel? That grand hotel fronted the Intracoastal Waterway, just north of where the Flagler Museum is now. It was torn down shortly after the 1928 hurricane damaged it.

Last fall/winter you mentioned that you would have an online catalogue. After living in Palm Beach County since 1966, I am now living in St. Petersurg, FLorida and am waiting anxiously for Anthony’s catalogue on line.
